Just as sure as the holiday season brings gifts, it brings extra trash.
Lots of extra trash.
Extra trash isn’t a problem if dealt with in a responsible manner, but when it’s not.
Cheryl Merzbacher, Supervisor at City of Cuero Environmental Services and volunteer at Keep Cuero Beautiful says that there are a number of actions at play. “Some weeks are good, some are bad. Over Christmas and New Year’s, people generate a lot more trash, which is unavoidable. But what is avoidable is the littering problem because of waste not being disposed of properly. We see trash bags thrown in the dumpsters by people who haven’t tied the top of the bags––trash falls out onto the ground. Also, a lot of people will send their kids out to throw bags into the dumpsters, and the kids can’t quite reach high enough to get the bags in. In one recent case, we had to go and remove 260 pounds of trash from in front of a dumpster, just so our truck could get in place to empty the dumpster.”
It’s not just messy, Merzbacher continues, “it’s a health hazard. When it’s trash, it attracts raccoons, rats, and other pests. When people dump brush at the dumpsters, it attracts snakes and ant piles.”
City of Cuero Environmental Services offers free brush pick-up every week. And every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., you can drop off brush for free at the City Yard on Cheatham Street.
