First it was the NFL, now we have NBA stars taking part of their salaries in Bitcoin…while the owners of Grand Theft Auto may be getting heavy into the metaverse.
It’s your boy Ross Mac, and these are the biggest stories in cryptocurrency on Tuesday, January 11.
Klay Thompson made headlines this week returning for his first game in over 900 days since his injury…but that’s not all he did…he, alongside his teammate Andre Iguadola, announced that they will be taking a portion of their next salary in bitcoin and will also donate $1 million in bitcoin to fans. Thompson tweeted that he believes Bitcoin is the future of money. The two partnered with Cash App to not only allow them to receive part of their salaries in BTC, but also allow them to make the donations….Klay you might not have made the top 75 list…but you alright in my book…
Take-Two Interactive, which is behind game titles such as Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead, is acquiring Zynga who is behind games like Farmville…they are acquiring them for $12.7 billion. And here’s where it gets interesting…the acquisition opens the door for NFTs and Web3 opportunities involving your favorite Take-Two games. Zynga had announced, last year, that it had plans to shift its focus to blockchain-backed games. So, you gonna buy up some GTA NFTs if they start hitting OpenSea? Or better yet…will you be able to play GTA in the metaverse.
A Tesla owner told CNBC that they’ve used their car to mine up to $800 a month in cryptocurrencies with his electric vehicle. What’s funny is that Elon Musk infamously stopped accepting Bitcoin payments due to environmental reasons…but now it seems you can mine crypto using your environmentally-friendly car…The Tesla owner Siraj Raval revealed that he mines ethereum by hooking up graphics processing units to the car battery. He even added that, while he’s aware this risks his car warranty, he thinks that the mining is worth it…He’s literally allowing his car to mine his monthly car note…genius.
