The second round of the 2022 Women’s NCAA Tournament continues after a day of history-making performances and exciting upsets. Day 1 saw two No. 10 seeds, Creighton and South Dakota upset their No. 2 seed opponents and punch the first ever Sweet Sixteen tickets for their programs.
The No. 1 seeds South Carolina, Louisville and Stanford held strong to continue proving why they earned those spots in the first day of the second round. Meanwhile, the No. 1 seed NC State Wolfpack got the job done on the second day with a confident win over Kansas State.
Monday’s set of games will feature three double-digit seeds still dancing and looking to continue their Cinderella runs. Eight double-digit seeds have already picked up wins in this year’s Women’s NCAA Tournament, which is tied for the most ever. There were also eight wins in 2018, but No. 12 seed Belmont, and No. 11 seeds Princeton and Villanova could help break that record on Sunday.
- No. 1 seed NC State got an 89-57 win over No. 9 Kansas State with a great offensive effort from the entire team, including 5-of-5 shooting from three-point range from Diamond Jonson coming from the bench. NC State is heading to its fourth consecutive Sweet 16, which is a program-record streak.
- No. 12 seed Belmont took No. 5 seed Oregon to double-overtime and earned a 73-70 victory in the first round. The Bruins will try to use that momentum to get a win against No. 4 seed — and in-state foe — Tennessee. The Volunteers made it to the second round with an 80-67 win over No. 13 seed Buffalo.
- No. 1 seed UConn cruised past No. 15 seed Mercer with an 83-38 win behind four Huskies scoring in double digits. That result became UConn’s 28th straight NCAA Tournament first round win. UConn will take on No. 7 seed UCF. The Knights made it to the Second Round after a 69-52 win over No. 10 seed Florida. Senior forward Brittney Smith led UCF’s offense with 26 points.
- No. 4 Arizona survived a tough No. 13 seed UNLV Rebels team in the first round and will now have to face No. 5 North Carolina. The Tar Heels got their double-digit win over a persistent Stephen F. Austin team thanks to a dominating fourth quarter and a 28-point game by Deja Kelly.

Halftime: Notre Dame 60, Oklahoma 25
This is the most points Notre Dame has ever scored in an NCAA Tournament game. Oklahoma averages 83.2 points per game this season, but the Sooners were held to only 25 points and 24.2% shooting in the first two quarters. Senior guard Taylor Roberts is the only Oklahoma player in double digits right now with 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Oklahoma has to limit turnovers in the second half, as the team has already registered 16 vs Notre Dame’s five. Three Fighting Irish are in double figures with freshman guard Sonia Citron and senior Dara Mabrey having 17 points each.

Halftime: Michigan 32, Villanova 29
Naz Hillman took the game over for Michigan in the second quarter scoring 10 points — she has 16 for the game. The two-time All-American also had five first half rebounds and is the only Wolverine — man or woman — to amass 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career in Ann Arbor. Villanova is 5-of-13 from 3-point land after starting 0-for-6 and Lior Garzon is leading the way with three 3s and 11 first half points for the Wildcats.

End of 1st quarter: Notre Dame 35, Oklahoma 12
The No. 5 seed Fighting Irish came out hot on the offensive end with a 20-0 run in the middle of the first quarter. Notre Dame senior guard Dara Mabrey is having a terrific shooting day with a 17-point performance while going 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. No. 4 seed Oklahoma was held to under 30% shooting from the field in the first period.

End of 1st quarter: Villanova 16, Michigan 13
The first frame in Ann Arbor was defined by miscues. The pace, at times was sluggish and Villanova wound up 2-for-8 from 3-point range after starting 0-for-6 and missing several open looks, while Michigan committed seven first quarter turnovers. Wolverines’ star Naz Hillmon got going late in the first and had six points to lead Michigan. Meanwhile, Maddy Siegrist, the nation’s second-leading scorer at nearly 26 points per game, got going late in the period and has six points after one quarter as well.

Final: NC State 89, Kansas State 57
No. 1 NC State showed its depth with every player who checked in scoring at least two points against No. 8 seed Kansas State. The Wolfpack took control early in the game and kept the momentum going to pull away more each quarter. As a whole, NC State shot at 54.7% from the field and hit nine three-pointers. Sophomore guard Diamond Johnson was responsible for five of those with perfect shooting from beyond the arc. Senior forward Kayla Jones led the winning team with 18 points shooting at an impressive 8-of-9 from the field.

End of 3rd quarter: NC State 66. Kansas State 39
Raina Perez is stepping up big for the Wolfpack in the NCAA Tournament. The senior guard— averaging 8.7 points per game this season — scored 16 points in the first round, and is leading her team today with 15 points so far.

NC State took control even with star center Elissa Cunane being on the bench since the 6:37 mark in the first quarter. The Wolfpack outshot Kansas State 55.2% – 37.5% in the first two periods. They are also outrebounding the Wildcats 19-10. Senior guard Kai Crutchfield is leading the winning offense with 10 point on 4-of-7 shooting from the field, including two three-pointers. Kansas State freshman guard Serena Sundell is leading all scorers with 12 points.
